Safe & Resilient Schools: Student Mental Health Course
Â
This nine-module course will provide strong foundational learning and skills to help educators be attuned and responsive to students experiencing mental health challenges. This course is sequential. You must take the modules in the order they are presented and complete all elements of each module before moving on to the next.
The course uses scripted video to tell the story of four middle school students experiencing mental health challenges. Teaching is structured around the story elements and includes didactic teaching, individual reflection, group discussion and knowledge checks throughout the course. All story oriented video will also include descriptive text captions that can be found in the link below the story videos.Â
The course begins with self-exploration regarding your own automatic responses to challenging student behaviors, including exploration around bias and mental health stigma. Next, you will learn about four main areas of mental health challenges experienced by youth and do some reflection around the students you work with, including your schools mental health system. Last, you will learn about adversity, stress and trauma and identify specific trauma sensitive practices and responses you can begin integrating into your role as an educator.Â

This six-module course will provide strong foundational learning and skills to help educators be attuned and responsive to threat assessment and safety challenges and needs in schools. This course is sequential. You must take the modules in the order they are presented and complete all elements of each module before moving on to the next.
The course uses teaching video's, interactive assessments and reflections and supplemental readings to boost learner knowledge of threat assessment and safety challenges in schools. This course is built for all school staff. No special knowledge is necessary.
It is our vision that all school staff have the knowledge and skills contained in this training.Â
The course begins with information about the the critical importance of information sharing as a part of your school's overall safety strategy. Next, you will learn generally about best practices in threat assessment, through the lens of every school professional. This will provide you with the knowledge to be helpful should you ever find yourself concerned, or be asked to be a part of your school's threat assessment team. Next, the course will tackle the importance of follow-up and safety planning as an ongoing and critically important process in your school's threat assessment and safety strategy. Last, you will learn about the connection between school climate and adaptive leadership, including strategies that you can start using today to improve your school's climate.Â

Early identification of student mental health challenges is an essential component of a safe and supportive school learning environment. Awareness of the types of behaviors reflecting a mental health concern or crisis can help schools to efficiently and effectively provide the necessary support to students who are in need. When significant emotional and behavioral problems arise, knowing how to work with others in your school to connect students to community-based supports may also be required. Designed for School Resource Officers, this course provides an overview of how to connect students with varying mental health needs to necessary supports both within and outside the school setting. This course is the fourth in a six-part series titled MSP Training in School Safety and Mental Health for School Resource Officers.
